Packing a Garage

Packing a Garage

Packing a garage for a move can be an area that is often overlooked. It can also be a daunting task due to the wide variety of items and tools typically stored there. Here are some ideas and tips to help you with the process:

Declutter and sort: Begin by decluttering your garage. Get rid of any items you no longer need or use. Sort the remaining items into categories, such as tools, sports equipment, gardening supplies, etc. This will help you organize and pack efficiently.

Disassemble large items: If you have large items like workbenches, shelves, or tool cabinets, disassemble them to make them easier to pack and transport. Keep all the necessary hardware in labeled bags or containers and tape them securely to the corresponding furniture.

Do not pack any hazardous materials or substances in your garage, such as paint, oil, gasoline, or pesticides. This also includes flammables such as oily rags, matches, and charcoal. If you have questions, your Jay’s Relocation Consultant can provide you with a list of items that cannot be transported. Properly dispose of hazardous materials: These items require special handling and cannot be transported with regular household items. Contact your local waste management facility to learn about the proper disposal methods.

For smaller tools or loose items: Consider using plastic storage containers or toolboxes to keep them organized. Don’t overload boxes: Be mindful of the weight of each box. Heavy items like tools or machinery should be packed in smaller boxes to prevent them from becoming too cumbersome to lift or risking box failure. Use larger boxes for lighter items like sports equipment or decorations.

Secure and protect equipment: For power tools or equipment with cords, use zip ties or twist ties to keep them neatly organized and prevent tangling. Wrap delicate or sharp tools with protective material to avoid damage or injuries. If possible, retain the original packaging for valuable or sensitive equipment.

Remember to give yourself ample time to pack the garage, as it is often one of the more time-consuming areas of the house. By staying organized and following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle the task of packing your garage.
