Don’t Pay All the Money Upfront:
One of the biggest red flags is a moving company that demands payment in full before the job even begins. Legitimate movers typically request a deposit of around 10%, with the remainder due just before the shipment unloads at delivery. Be cautious of any company that asks for full payment upfront, especially for long-distance moves.
Take a Look at the Facility:
Ideally, you should choose a moving company with a physical presence in your area. Visiting the company’s facility can give you peace of mind and ensure that they have the resources to handle your move effectively. If you receive a flyer in the mail, check out the address provided on the brochure.
Get It in Writing:
Verbal agreements are not legally binding, so make sure to get all quotes, contracts, and terms in writing. This includes details about pricing, services provided, and any additional charges. Having everything documented will protect you in case of any disputes or discrepancies later.
Do your Research:
Research is key when choosing a moving company. Check reviews, ask for recommendations, and contact the Better Business Bureau to check for complaints. The internet is full of examples of moving scams if you want to investigate further. Most importantly, trust your instincts – if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
