How to Make your New Home Feel Homey

The best thing about being home is feeling at home. Home is where you can relax and be yourself, where you feel comfortable and safe.

When you move to a new place, you might feel out of sorts at first, because your new place, no matter how nice, doesn’t feel like home! After the movers have left, and you are standing amongst a bunch of moving boxes in an unfamiliar room, you might even miss your old home, just for a bit. • Make a cozy spot – most of the house is in an uproar, so make one space comfy right away. You need a place where you can relax, somewhere with a couch and soft chairs to curl up in. Put a plant or a few mementos out along with blankets and a pillow in case anyone needs a nap.
• Get the children settled – uprooting can be quite upsetting, especially to little ones. Make the experience fun by allowing some special privileges, just for today. Put a favourite movie on in that new ‘cozy spot’. Maybe it’s a good day for a special snack or treat while they watch. Be sure to have a few of their favourite toys easily accessible to give them a sense of familiarity.
• Consider the pets too – If your animals are out of sorts (and they almost certainly will be), find a quiet room away from the hubbub and put them inside, with their bedding, food and water, and some cuddles for reassurance.
• Don’t stress about unpacking – it can feel a bit overwhelming when you are faced with an entire household’s worth of unpacking but try not to let it get to you. As long as you know where your box of essentials is, the rest of it can wait. If you absolutely can’t relax until everything is unpacked, talk to your moving consultant about unpacking as part of your moving services package.
