The Ultimate Guide to Packing Dishes for a Safe Move

Packing Dishes

Packing dishes can be one of the most nerve-wracking parts of moving. With their fragile nature and irregular shapes, it’s essential to take extra precautions to ensure they make it to your new home in one piece. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you pack your dishes like a pro.

1. Prepare Your Boxes
  • Did you know that Jay’s has specially designed boxes for packing dishes? Ask your relocation consultant about them during your free estimate.
  • If you use other boxes, choose medium-sized ones to prevent them from becoming too heavy.
  • Reinforce the bottom of each box with a double layer of tape and add a cushion at the bottom of the box using crumpled packing paper or a layer of bubble wrap.
2. Wrap Each Dish Individually
  • Lay a piece of packing paper on a flat surface.
  • Place a dish in the centre, then fold the paper’s edges over it.
  • For extra protection, add a layer of bubble wrap around particularly fragile or valuable dishes.
3. Stack Strategically
  • Keep the heaviest items at the bottom of the box, like plates or bowls.
  • Place each item vertically instead of stacking them flat; this reduces pressure and prevents breakage.
  • Add a layer of cushioning material between each layer of dishes.
4. Secure Hollow Items

For hollow items like cups, glasses, and mugs:

  • Fill the interior with crumpled packing paper for added support.
  • Wrap each piece individually in packing paper and secure it with tape if needed.
  • Place these items near the top of the box, where they’re less likely to be crushed.
5. Fill Empty Spaces
  • Use crumpled paper or bubble wrap to fill any gaps in the box. This prevents items from shifting during transit. Using your kitchen towels to fill gaps is also a great idea.
  • Ensure the box is full but not overstuffed.
6. Seal and Label
  • Close the box and seal it with tape.
  • Clearly label the side of the box as “FRAGILE” and note which room it belongs to.

Packing dishes doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little care and the right materials, your dishes will arrive safe and sound.
