How to Pack Lamps for a Move

Packing Lamps

Lamps are essential to our homes, providing both light and ambiance, but they can be tricky to pack when it comes time to move. With their delicate shades, fragile bulbs, and awkward shapes, lamps require special care to ensure they arrive at your new home in perfect condition. Here’s a step-by-step guide to packing your lamps safely and efficiently:

1. Disassemble the Lamp

Start by carefully disassembling your lamp:

  • Remove the bulb and pack it separately. Wrap it in bubble wrap and place it in a small box labeled “Fragile.”
  • Unscrew the lampshade and harp (the metal piece that holds the shade). Pack these separately to prevent damage.
2. Pack the Lampshade

Lampshades are delicate and prone to dents, so they require special attention:

  • Wrap the shade in packing paper. Avoid using newspaper, as the ink can transfer and stain.
  • Place the wrapped shade in a box that’s slightly larger than the shade itself. If you’re packing multiple shades, nest smaller ones inside larger ones, using paper or foam between them for cushioning.
3. Wrap the Lamp Base

The lamp base is often heavy and breakable, especially if it’s made of ceramic, glass, or metal:

  • Wrap the base in bubble wrap or foam sheets, securing it with packing tape.
  • Place the wrapped base in a box with enough padding on all sides.
  • A tip from our experts? Pad the sides with your blankets and towels—you’re packing them anyway, might as well put them to good use!
4. Label and Seal the Boxes

Once everything is packed:

  • Seal the boxes with packing tape.
  • Clearly label each box with its contents (“Lampshade,” “Lamp Base,” etc.) and mark them as “Fragile.” This will ensure careful handling during the move.

By taking these steps, you can protect your lamps and ensure they light up your new home just as beautifully as before. Happy moving!
